THE MARK OF ZAHA HADID ON ITALIAN ARCHITECTURE AND DESIGN

Archistar Zaha Hadid, who passed away in Miami only recently, will always have a special place in the world of architecture, and not only. A feminist icon, she was also often criticized for her ideas and projects, at times maybe too grand and imposing. Still, she was the first woman to receive the 3 main awards in Architecture: the Pritzker Architecture Prize in 2004, the RIBA Stirling Prize and the Gold Medal by the Royal Institute of British Architects in 2016. In 2010 she was included in the list of the 100 most influential people in the world by Times magazine, a real exception for a designer.

A lot has been written about her, and we wanted to acknowledge her by remembering how influential she has been and what mark she has left in the world of Italian architecture and design. Deeply appreciative of Italy, she admired designers Mendini, Superstudio and Castiglione the most. It was also in Italy that she was able to realize some of the most extraordinary projects in her already impressive portfolio: MAXXI Museum in Rome, City Life in Milan and Stazione Marittima in Salerno, who she was set to inaugurate at the end of April.

Rome’s MAXXI Museum, for a very long time a construction site that resulted in the regeneration of an area of the city that was unused before, earned her the Stirling in 2010 and is one of the works that best represents her style and vision.

City Life is another great project in urban planning and regeneration, a huge development in the centre of Milan characterized by fluid lines and futuristic look, one of Zaha Hadid’s classic traits.

Her latest project in Italy, Stazione Marittima in Salerno (a city not too far from Naples) is ‘an oyster with a hard external shell and fluid and soft internal elements,’ [Zaha Hadid Architects] a real transition from land to sea, from the solid to the liquid.

A larger-than-life figure, throughout her career Zaha Hadid collaborated with some of the great Italian design brands, from Alessi to Artemide and B&B Italia.

Moon System sofa designed for B&B Italia is a highly dynamic sofa with a unique profile that has become an icon of Italian design worldwide.

Designed for Artemide, Genesy floor lamp is inspired by nature and the organic development of trees, from which its gentle lines are drawn.

A career full of success and recognition, an indelible signature who will be impossible to forget.

I started out trying to create buildings that would sparkle like isolated jewels; now I want them to connect, to form a new kind of landscape, to flow together with contemporary cities and the lives of their peoples.
